The Ballistic Fingerprinting system implemented in Maryland has been in the news. There were articles in the Baltimore Sun on Nov. 6 and 7, but they are only accessible to registered users so including a link did not seem to be useful. http://www.sunspot.net

This website has the report scanned into PDF format. It is large and is scanned at three different levels of quality.

Detractors have pointed out that all four of the instances when they MD-IBIS database has been used to make a match involved the police having the firearm. The cartridges which were matched were test firings. In fact, all four of the firearms were identified as stolen. Two of them had obliterated serial numbers which the ATF lab had been unable to restore.

The other two had serial numbers and had been reported missing as a result of theft. It seems odd that they would match the guns by ballistic fingerprint when they had the serial numbers and the report from the theft.
