Yes, Eugene, there is a slippery slope. As long as there are evil men, they will find something to assist them in carrying out their designs. I suspect sticks will be next. ;-)
Last week, a 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged after allegedly charging police with a sword near Castlemaine, in central Victoria.
A case where a blade elevated what would have been a vulgar street brawl into something dignified. "Sacre bleu! There is only one man in Australia who can handle a sword like zat!" Or perhaps the perp's cry "Hail Caesar! We who are about to die salute you!"
Mr Haermeyer warned that police would be actively hunting for knives and swords after being given new powers and 480 metal detectors late last year, allowing them to search people they reasonably suspected were carrying weapons.
Using metal detectors to hunt for rapiers and broadswords does seem a trifle unproductive, altho it might be useful to catch the perp with a roman gladius, not to mention chainmail, under his coat.
