Safe Gun Storage Laws Linked to Lower Suicide Rates
8/3/2004
Teen suicide rates have declined modestly as states have passed laws requiring that firearms be stored safely, according to a new study.
Reuters reported Aug. 3 that the study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that as many as 300 suicides may have been prevented because 18 states have passed safe-storage laws. Suicide rates in states with such laws fell short of statistical projections during the study period.
However, the report also said that minimum age restrictions for gun purchases do not appear to be effective in preventing suicides.
The study appears in the Aug. 4, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
