On the assumption that Patents & Trademarks fit into the ConLaw area,
and being applied to firearms fits firearms-conlaw, I'll reply here.

I haven't heard about any effort by Colt, but Colt's name and the name
of a number of other firearms manufacturers have been used as part of
the names of a number of "calibers".

For example, with introduction dates when I can find them in
Cartridges of the World 8/e (this is only a small sample of such "named
calibers") many or most of these are in current production.

17 Remington 1971
222 Remington 1950
222 Remington Magnum
223 Remington 1957 essentially adopted as the military 5.56mm
22-250 Remington 1965
224 Weatherby Magnum
225 Winchester 1964
240 Weatherby Magnum
25-20 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) 1893-5
250 Savage
7mm Mauser 1892
32-20 Winchester 1882
32 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) 1899-1903
32 S&W (Smith & Wesson) 1878
32 S&W (Smith & Wesson) Long 1903
32 H&R (Harrington & Richardson) Magnum 1984
32 Long Colt 1875
32 Short Colt 1875
38 Smith & Wesson Special 1902 also known as the 38 Colt Special
and more generally called "38 Special"
38 Colt Automatic 1900
44 Colt 1871
45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) 1905 also know as the 45 Automatic
45 Colt 1873

I have seen many of these calibers of ammo made by other
manufacturers, and used in firearms made by many manufacturers. E.g.
innumerable manufacturers other than Colt have made handguns in 45ACP
caliber. Similarly for rifles in the 223 Remington caliber.

I haven't heard of any manufacturers protesting the use of their name
in the caliber names.

Is Colt upset about their name in the ammunition/caliber, or in the
Colt 45 malt liquor? :-)
