May have been SKSs. There have been several highly publicized officer shootings in the past 5-6 years (Tacoma, WA; someplace in AL, two officers down?; at least one more in Indiana). The SKS, with it's original fixed 10-round magazine, does not meet the 1994 a/w ban criteria, but is very common all over the country. With it's folding bayonet and military origin, most news reports refer to it as an "assault weapon."
