May have been SKSs.  There have been several highly publicized officer
shootings in the past 5-6 years (Tacoma, WA; someplace in AL, two officers
down?; at least one more in Indiana).

The SKS, with it's original fixed 10-round magazine, does not meet the
1994 a/w ban criteria, but is very common all over the country.  With it's
folding bayonet and military origin, most news reports refer to it as an
"assault weapon."
