I met Lott once.  Had a nice, albeit brief, chat with the fellow
(prototypical academic number cruncher if I ever saw one).  Seems "More
guns, less crime" was not his idea for the book title (though he undoubtedly
had a right to object to the editorial license).  It was a little
sensationalized for his taste.
