If I remember correctly, that was a JAR with "manipulated" byte-code 
which exploited some particular JVMs when the code was executed (at 
least it was able to download malware from the network and execute them 
under current user, so maybe it was "only" able to escape the security 
manager restrictions).

Yes, such things might happen. OpenSSH had also some exploits. But it 
is considered secure.
