I agree with Tony. I have developed programs that run under Windows, 
Linux and OS X using an embedded layout. With version 2.0 and 2.1 any 
user can access databases without problems.
Version 2.5 would break my programs too.

There are many programs that run in a single-user mode and access a 
database. One of the appeals of Firebird was its ability to create a 
database program that will "just run", without any system fiddling.
