This is true, and anyone with half a brain can realise this, however
this doesn't mean it's not worth it.

The lock on your house and car are easily picked by a skilled criminal,
failing that a brick will achieve a similar result for the unskilled. Do
you not bother locking up when you leave your home?

It's not simply an either/or situation, there is a place and use for
encryption as a deterrent in these cases, however technically flawed it
may be. You'll never stop a determined thief, true, but you can at least
deter the far more numerous casual ones.
