Brian,
Does you car have power brakes? If so, I had a prolem like this years ago on an old Volvo. The brake booster had a hole in the diaphram and when the brake pedal was not pressed it ran fine but when I stepped on the pedal it flexed the diaphram and expanded the hole and created a huge vacuum leak and the car died. It took me several weeks to figure it out. I replaced the booster and the problem went away. Just a thought.

Any idea why when I depress the brake pedal, the engine would die? It
doesn't stutter, just dies instantly. It was running well last week but
it overheated so I just finished replacing the thermostat and water pump
and put it all back together. I started the car and it started fine,
idled well, but when I press the brake, it dies. As a test I tried
starting the car with the brake depressed and it won't start. But with
my foot off the brake, starts fine.

Any thoughts that might help in my troubleshooting?
