I should have said my car is a Sprint 6 cyl and the engine serial  
number is on the deck.  Actually, I think enough of the number is  
left that a little acid will bring it back enough to read.  But the  
question, in the case of a 6 cyl, is valid for Pontiacs, too.

Dan the number you say has been decked off is your engine unit ID #.
You should still have the VIN stamped to the block on the side by bellhousing .
Even if it was decked  it may still be there faintly. I hope you took a pic of 
it before
it was machined.Also may I ask why it was decked?
Ive never had to deck the block on these only the head.
I also have a couple of blocks that have errors on the VIN and errors on the 
EUN.

I have an NOS M-21 that has the metal tag for a 68 GTO and has never had the 
VIN stamped
in it.I see no reason why this couldnt be stamped to match a cars VIN and be 
correct IF
that car has a date within a few weeks after the tranny and if the M-21 was 
correct for that VIN.
I would however disclose this to any future owners.
