John, I should have said my car is a Sprint 6 cyl and the engine serial number is on the deck. Actually, I think enough of the number is left that a little acid will bring it back enough to read. But the question, in the case of a 6 cyl, is valid for Pontiacs, too. Dan 68 Sprint Convertible Dan the number you say has been decked off is your engine unit ID #. You should still have the VIN stamped to the block on the side by bellhousing . Even if it was decked it may still be there faintly. I hope you took a pic of it before it was machined. Also may I ask why it was decked? Ive never had to deck the block on these only the head. I also have a couple of blocks that have errors on the VIN and errors on the EUN. I have an NOS M-21 that has the metal tag for a 68 GTO and has never had the VIN stamped in it.I see no reason why this couldnt be stamped to match a cars VIN and be correct IF that car has a date within a few weeks after the tranny and if the M-21 was correct for that VIN. I would however disclose this to any future owners.
