First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... I agree with idea that it is possible to create fraud by changing the Vin plate data and purposely giving false information to a prospective buyer, but I am not going to stand on this a band wagon. I think that the knowledge of where the Vin numbers are for our group is a plus for us. Having this knowledge will help us from getting stung by some crook or simply misinformation from a totally innocent owner who was told it was something it isn't. Many states have purged their files on previous owners longer than 25 years, and going back to find the previous culprits are totally impossible. I am not interested who did what when, but what I am buying now. Yes, we have the PHS to draw from, but most of my cases someone is waiting to buy a particular car standing in line behind me and I do not have the time to protect my purchase by extensive research. I have a code book for reading the cowl tag info, but a smart crook would be able to hide or cover the the under coat paint. In most cases you can detect that the color has been changed, but about 95% of all of the run of mill Firebirds out there have had a color changes along the last 40 years. Next time you are out there looking for that special Bird, see what happens when you tell the seller you want to check the hidden vin numbers and that you will need to dismantle part of his car. I appreciate the input so far as to key locations to look for vin number. Bob P Portland, Or </HTML>
