The stud that I kept getting from the dealer was significantly shorter than  
the correct one. The ball did not fit but about half way into the Z-bar  tube. 
Now, it has been many years since I dealt with this but the correct  one fit 
much farther into the tube. My initial fear was that engine torque under  hard 
acceleration (showing off)would be enough to make the tube come off of the  
shorter stud.

Dont  know if its right but compared it to one I had in a bucket of parts
removed  about 30 yrs ago so I doubt it was a superseded one.
I would feel better if  it was in another inch or so.Hold comments please.

I had a similar problem many years ago. The stud  coming off of the block  
broke during a shift and the replacement  stud I was given by the dealer was 
a  
part that superseded the  original. That stud was quite a bit shorter than 
the  
original and  the clutch Z-bar barely caught on it. After several attempts, I 
  
finally got the right one. The GM part number back then was 9786072. I  
remember 
that number because I made a trip to the dealer week after week  to see if 
they  had gotten the right one yet.
