All of that stuff is basically an asphalt type sheet that adds weight to a panel and essentially
lowers the resonant frequency. There are also some spray on and roll on products for the same
application. I've even heard of using spray in bed line too. I've had good luck with a product
called "road kill", made an old chevy truck door sound like a lexus when it closes.
Essentially anything that is sticky on one side and heavy will do a good job. You don't even
necessarily need "full coverage". With dynamat you are paying for a brand name, its big
in the car audio industry.

This is a bit of an oversimplification. Some of the sound deadening
products are
indeed an asphalt based sheet, others are butyl based products, some of
which do
not use asphalt as a filler. Take a look at this site where many of the
popular
products are reviewed and tested.

This guy performed an interesting variety of tests, and compared the
data sheets
of the various products. You can then compare and make your best judgment on
which may work best for you and your budget. Try to find a balance between
cost and effectiveness.
A possible downside to some asphalt products could be the sheets coming
unglued or melt in high heat, and may even cause the inside of your car to
smell like, well, asphalt. Repeated exposures to heat levels as high as 140
to 170 degrees can cause failures much like a single exposure at 240
degrees.
