First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Garth,
I have the Vintage Air system, too. I recommend that you get the AC pulleys. Original AC cars got smaller water pump pulleys and larger crank pulleys than the non-AC cars. This was done to spin the water pump faster in order to deal with the heat from the additional load on the engine.
The crank gets a third pulley that drives the compressor. It mounts behind the other crank pulleys. You may run the risk of throwing a belt if you try to drive the compressor without the extra pulley. Someone else may be able to provide info on how to avoid that problem.

First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... My 68 Bird is an original non-AC with 350 and power steering and I have installed a VIntage Air AC system although I haven't got the pulley and belts worked out yet. From the alignment of the existing pulleys and the new AC unit, it appears I should just be able to replace the belt that currently goes around the crank pulley, water pump and alternator with a longer belt that goes around the crank pulley, alternator and AC unit. The other belt will still drive the water pump and power steering. Does anyone see a problem with this thought? My background is definitely not mechanical and any advice or direction is appreciated. Thanks Garth 68 350HO convert
