As you probably know the 400 is a torque motor, but avoid loading it up at too
low an rpm. Depending on the cam, intake and gearing, most just barely start to
make power at ~1K rpm. As with most cars, once you're up to cruise speed, the
car shouldn't require much power. The obvious sign of over-loading is a heavy
knock. Also engine damage is possible if the piston side-loads and the cylinder
surface is compromised.
This is why gear selection is important if an aftermarket trans is installed.
For a street car, it's not desirable to have a too high 1st or too low an
over-drive 5th [or 6th]. With said I'd suggest checking the specs for your cam
[dyno sheet] and final drive gearing and that should provide an answer to a
usable cruise rpm.
BTW, Super is $4.09 on the west coast [$7.10 for 100 octane]. However my FB 400
is not my daily driver..
