I can at least answer the alternator question. Your alternator was made
October 16, 1968. In 8L16, the 8 stands for the year 1968, the L stands for the
month of October and 16 stands for the 16th day of the month. This is just the
date code for the alternator and does not indicate a model year. You said that
the car was ordered in Jan and delivered in Feb. I assume that the build date
for the body of your car is in January, buy you can look on the data plate to
see when it is. This sounds like it might be the original alternator since
your car has AC and must have come with a 55 amp alternator. A date coded
alternator of Oct 1968 on a January build date car may seem like a big spread,
but it can happen. Let us know what date code the data plate has. It may be
look something like 01A for the first week of January or 12B for the second
week of December for example.
Someone more familiar with your carb and heads can help you there, but the
engine code is stamped on the block, not on the heads.
Good luck!
