First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List
.........................................................................

Hey everybody! I just want to say thanks for your help ahead
of time.

 So currently I own a 68 firebird
which needs a lot to complete the restoration of the car. I worked on the car
until I left for school a year ago and if I want to finish it I need to pay a
lot of money to a shop to do their own full restoration from scratch. Although
this car is very near and dear to my heart, I am beginning to recognize that it
is more economical to purchase a vehicle that is all finished. Whatever car I
end with will be my daily driver and I do not have a shelter for the vehicle.
This is another reason I think it is a poor choice to spend a lot of money for
a better than showroom restoration. I found a candidate on eBay, the link is
below this message, very similar to how I wanted to do my own. I have bought
other cheaper project cars on eBay before without a problem, but I am more
hesitant to buy a vehicle this expensive without seeing it and checking the
thoroughness of the restoration myself. I spoke with the gentleman at length
and he seems genuine. He said he has owned the care for 4 years after he
purchased it from the original owner. He said he has spent most of that time
restoring the car. The only things he did not do is the body, paint and engine
work. The fact that he took the care to buy some of the more expensive parts
that he did, like the intake and radiator, lead me to believe that he didn’t
cut corners. But the car did have rust prior to the restoration. Although he
said all rust was extensively cut out and there is none left, I am still
concerned
about the integrity of the body. I have seen rust come back on my brother’s
camaro after it was all ‘cut out’ as well. So my question is, What is your take
on this vehicle? Does it look like a good car? And more specifically, What do
you think of the engine specifications he lists? Making conclusions from these
numbers are not my strength. Although I am fairly certain there wouldn't be a
problem, do think there would be a problem bolting on a mild procharger? If
there seems to be a consensus that this vehicle
is worth looking into then I plan on having the owner take it to a shop and
have them inspect it. But even then a shop is just looking to make sure that
everything works, rather than the subtle details of craftsmanship you or I
might look for. Or, should I just keep lookin?

If I do purchase this vehicle and
sell my project I anticipate saving myself A LOT of the money that I designated
for my car. Money that I can use both to upgrade the eBay car to how I want it
and money I can use for things other than my car. And having spare money with a
project car is a rare blessing. J
If I buy this car I intend to buy a tremec 5 speed conversion for cruising
economy, vintage air ac, a stereo system and, although maybe not right away, a
p1sc procharger.

                So…
What is your impression of this car. Also, do any of you live near San Marcos
Cali?!?!?!?! I would be most grateful if someone would be able to inspect the
vehicle for me. Thanks a lot again and be frank!!!
