He can't get the door to open in order to get to the screws that are on the door jamb!

It's a PITA to see in there even with the door panel off. You may need a good size inspection mirror and a good light as well as one of those long pointed tools (kinda like a scribe but much thinner) and you'll have to poke around the latch and move things round as you try to open it with the latch.

Raise the window.  Unscrew the lock mechanism from the door jamb.  Push it
inside the door.  Place a flash light at the bottom inside the door. Now you
can see what you are doing.  You will no doubt find a small broken spring.
Have fun.  It's not as complicated as it may seem.  To good thing is that as
you have the mechanism apart, you may want to replace a few other worn
items.
