IMHO that voltage is too high.  It will cook the battery.  What voltmeter are
you using to measure this?   You should verify with a digital voltmeter
measuring directly at the battery posts.  I think you adjust mechanical by
bending the contact arms or there might be an adjustment screw.

Subject: [FGF] Voltage regulator adjustment?

.........................................................................
It's been a couple of months since I've written.  First, an update.  With a new
battery, alternator, voltage regulator and disconnecting an aftermarket stereo
system my 68 is running well.  Actually, it may be running too well, which
leads to my question.  Before adding these new parts the voltmeter would read
between 10 and 12 when the car was running.  After adding the new parts the car
is running between 16 and 18 volts.  My Chilton's said I need to adjust the
voltage regulator.  I went online to see if this problem has been experienced
by others.  One person described a similar problem, and the person helping them
asked if they had a mechanical or electronic voltage regulator, since the
mechanical variety may need adjusted while the electronic wouldn't.  I called
AutoZone about mine, and the employee said they'd never heard of adjusting a
voltage regulator.

Before performing surgery on my new regulator I'd appreciate your input.  Do I
need to adjust the regulator?  If so, how do I do it?  Thanks again for your
help!

David
