Just a shot in the dark but if it's a 73 or later head it might be
for the EGR port.

This may seem like a weird question but does anyone know what the
casting area above the exhuast crossover is for? There is a
rectangular hole in the head on the manifold surface directly above
the square exhaust crossover hole. It goes back into the head kind
of in the shape of a Y but doesn't seem to go anywhere. What's it for?
Reason for the question: my stupid aftermarket RPM Performer doesn't
cover the hole completely on the passenger side.
