Sheen,
You're making extra work for yourself. Cam break-in takes 15 minutes, which
does not have to be continuous. I normally run 1500 -2000 rpm (no idling!)
about 5 minutes, shut down and let it cool then repeat 2x. Or you can just go
drive 15 to20 minutes as long as there is no significant idling. My preference
is to do the cam break-in stationary so that I can check for leaks, optimize
timing, etc prior to the road test. There is no need to change headers. The
exhaust gas temperatures during break-in shouldn't be significantly higher than
normal street driving unless you have a lean mixture issue or your timing is
way off.

I let it cool because the car is stationary and has less airflow across the
radiator & I don't want excessive coolant temperature. Also there may be small
air pockets in the system since the block was just filled with coolant.

If you're concerned about the header coating, you could break-in the cam two
minutes at a time. As long as you get it started quickly, keep the rpm's
correct, and get a total of about 15 minutes, the cam break-in should go fine.
The headers are going to get hot sooner or later - it's not uncommon for
headers (or manifolds) to glow red at night in normal service.

Good luck on the start up! It's always fun to hear one fire off for the first
time after putting it all back together.
David

Dan,

Please let me know if you are wiling to give up your rusty old headers. I need
a "sacrificial" set to break in my motor. During the intial cam break in, the
motor produces a LOT of heat and it can easily ruin the finish on my new
ceramic coated headers.
