List,

Hate to ask what seems like a stupid question but, is the Pontiac engine
internally or externally balanced.

I have a a 1974, 455 down at the machine shop. The shop asked me for a flex
plate or flywheel to balance the engine. I told them that they should go ahead
and balance the rotating assembly without the flywheel since the flywhell and
clutch plate had been balanced together and I would just bolt them on later.

They said I could not do that since the engine was externally balanced and that
the flywheel or flex plate were needed to get the balance correct. they said
there are holes in the flywheel and flex plate that prove this. They also said
that a lot of people believe differently but they are wrong.

I called Wade at BOP and he said the engines were internally balanced and if
the flywheel and clutch plate were balanced they were not needed to balance the
engine. this is also what I have always thought.

What is the right answer? Internally or externally balanced? Flywheel or
flex plate needed to balance the engine?

Joe what do you say?

Best regards,

Larry (Denver)
