First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Hello Paul, I went down to my shop this morning and examined a flex plate for a 455 that I have apart. It had no counterweights and no sign that there had been any counterweights removed. It does have a series of four holes, maybe 3/4 inch diameter in one area. I suspect that it is neutrally balanced, but I have no means to verify that today.
Later I will go by and take a look at a 400 that I have stored on an engine stand. I think it has a flex plate and I want to see if there are any weights on that one. Next week I may take the 455 flex plate to my machinist and ask him, as you have my curiosity going. It seems like flywheels and flex plates (and harmonic dampers) would all have to be neutrally balanced for an internally balanced rotating assembly. I did a quick search and found that TCI sells a "Pontiac 166 Tooth Internal Balance Flexplate" to fit "Pontiac 326 - 455 internally balanced V8 engines". It appears to be the only Pontiac flexplate offered by this vendor, which would be consistent with a factory internal balance. I'll post it if I find out anything further. David, Then why would the flywheel or flex plate not be neutrally balanced when stock? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
