First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List
.........................................................................
List,
First, hanks to all who reponded. I called several builders that were listed in
Jim hands book and this is what I found out:
ALL PONTIAC ENGINES CAME STOCK FROM THE FACTORY WITH A 6 INCH-OZ. EXTERNAL
BALANCE IN THE FLYWHEEL OR FLEX PLATE.
The confusion arises in that many prepared race engines have been converted to
internally balanced engines by adding weight to the crankshaft.
Examine the stock flex plate or flywheel and you will see holes drilled on one
side (or larger on one side). Put them on a center balance and they will be
heavy by 6 in/oz on one side.
Also, if they were totally neutral or in other words internally balanced there
would be no need for the staggered bolt patten on the rear cranksaft bolts.
The staggered pattern requires that the fly wheel and flex plate be instlled in
only one position.
I hope this helps set the record stright. I welcome any additional discussion
on this.
regards,
Larry (Denver)
