First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Hey Joe,
I removed all the wiring harnesses and refurbished them when I did my by 68 Coupe. Here's my "Do It Yourself" You will need: * WD-40 * Rags & a small nylon brush *Black Tape, Rubber, fabric and 3m Electrical (Remember you get what you pay for so, yes there is a difference between a $5.00 roll and 10 for $5.00 ..LOL) * 3/16", 1/4, 3/8" Heat shrink and a heat gun. * Solder (electrical-no acid) & a decent soldering gun. * Wire strippers * side cutters * Good Olfa L2 knife & blades. * Lots of Band-Aids if your not careful (-; * VOM Meter * Beer or (insert beverage of choice) * I Removed all harnesses and connectors from the Bird. * Stripped all the old tape and plastic wraps. * Marked the spots where the clips were bound into the harness. * Used lots of "Red Green special", (WD-40) and removed all dirt, oil and tape residue from the wires. * I inspected all the wires and clips for any breaks, cracks, worn areas, missing or burned insulation and crimped wires. * located & removed all after market connectors & splices. * All non-GM crimps were replaced. Splices were re-soldered. Tip: Looking for replacement wires/connectors etc? Save a bunch and visit the auto wreckers. There are tons of F & X bodies parts that interchange throughout the years. * The splices were sealed in an automotive grade heat shrink. That took care of the basic clean up, inspection and repair. At this point I deviated from the 68 factory wiring connectors and upgraded all the light sockets to newer ones collected from various year cars. The 1968 did not have a separate ground to the sockets. (They used the body/frame) and I was getting peeved chasing ground issues all the time. Or....Do what my neighbor did, Buy Beer & Whisky and befriend an electrician...lol Brent Block 68 350 Coupe StAlbert, Alberta,Canada http://firstgenfirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=378 ************* Snip ***************** Hey everybody, I getting ready to wire up my 68 convertible.
