First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... robin, nice car. you will get a lot of opinions here. here's mine. I would use a wire wheel and "whiz" down the entire pan. i use an air powered right angle die grinder and small cup brush with the twisted/braided wires. a drill works fine too. like this Letter A http://www.tptools.com/eccStoreImages/product_images/Images/ct-9805-steel-wire-brushes_R.jpg then i use the paint on rust converter, you can buy that at the local hardware store. it is white when applied then turns black when dry. wait till it dries, rattle can prime and re-spatter paint. joe

As a fairly new classic car enthusiast I didn't realize I should have been checking periodically under the trunk mat to see if water had been collecting there. Now 4 years later l have some surface rust and several rusty areas where I could actually chip the spatter paint away. I have taken a wire brush to the spots but am concerned there may be rust forming under the splatter paint but just hasn't bubbled up yet. I'm considering removing the splatter paint and redoing just to see if there is any other damage. Looking for recommendations on the best way to do this; remove w/ wire wheel, chemical removers, other ideas? Otherwise the trunk is in very good condition, I just want to keep it that way.
