Bob,
Pontiac actually made a tool [P/N: J-22603] for lifting the engine from
underneath the car. I think it bolts to the two 45 deg. ears on the front
timing cover. The service manual claims the engine can be lifted high enough
[4.5"] to pull the oil pan. I guess the rear trans mount is more forgiving than
originally thought.
