I set mine at the stop in the bottom since I could see it well. After you 
compress it, I think the ends may uncoil out a bit and get closer to the top 
stop. Not sure, but I remember hearing a quick and loud noise of the spring 
slipping into place...it even resonated a bit like a bell would when it "self 
adjusted".
