Hi David, not so speak for Gerrit, but here is the basics on how the Starter relay works and the second link is a good explanation on the whole charging system as an overview. http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/st-1.shtml http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/howitworks.shtml I installed this type of relay in my system and have never had an issue since, not once. In fact it was so long ago I had to go back over the information again myself. Out of sight out of mind... and had forgotten the basics when asked about it... Lol... As they explain it: The problem occurs because the large solenoid on the GM starter draws 40 to 50 amps at the moment the key is turned to "START." And that large amount of current must flow through a very lengthy circuit, from the battery to the dash area. Through dash wiring and switches, back out through the under-hood wiring, finally to the starter. I highly recommend going this route if your having any start issues. Pretty easy to do and it will make a difference! Brett - 67 Drop Top 455! Subject: Re: [FGF] 68 won't start From: <[email protected]> Hello, Gerrit! The only short I've found so far was the run wire to the solenoid. The exhaust manifold runs right next to the starter, and it looked like the wire had come too close to the manifold. I wrapped it and routed it away from the manifold. After doing that the arcing between the negative battery cable and post stopped, and the starter no longer tried to turn over the engine whenever the negative cable touched the battery post. How did you rewire the starter solenoid with a relay? I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of the electrical system in the car. That's definitely the system I understand least. Thanks for your help!
