First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Oops, now we are into the discussion of matching radiator capacity to the car..... the coolant flow should be matched to water pump capacity and heat load, I agree a restrictor such as a Tstat or plate will assist if the system is improperly balanced. You can also balance the radiator to water flow and heat capacity without using a Tstat.
Now it is time to take my 69 vert for a lunchtime drive on a beautiful Colorado afternoon :) Mark Lueker 308 SYSTEMS Inc. 970-282-7006 www.308systems.com -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]on Behalf Of Bjorn Sefeldt Sent: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 9:33 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [FGF] Cooling question First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Mark, my buddy who is an old Automotive engineer and a restorer with also a service shop, has told me that a T stat is good , because it does slow the coolant down some , to cool it more , w/o t stat , the coolant runs thru the radiator too fast and in a lot of times ,wont have enough time to cool. of course that's here in hot Texas... Bjorn the old 69 vert/HALF member/Houston ,Tx ++++++++++++ Subject: RE: [FGF] cooling question From: "Mlueker" <[email protected]> Date: Mon, 24 Aug 2009 21:19:55 -0600 I agree that a completely cold engine will run worse than a steady state temp engine, however, as I mentioned - when you are running an older car in a warm climate the time it takes to get to steady state is not very long(minutes). Thus, there is no real advantage to running a Tstat. The difference between a 195 and a 180 Tstat will not noticibly improve combustion efficiency in an engine, which will typically run this hot at steady state. As long as the flow rate is sufficient to keep the engine cool, its actual value doesn't matter. I agree on the coolant ratio....
