This may have been covered by now (a week behind again!) But it sounds
like this guy had a combination of poor quality aftermarket emblems (or
maybe even non Firebird emblems) and I'm betting he had them mounted on 
the wrong sides (drivers side on the passenger side etc) I've seen that
done before and it kind of jumps out at you...

The cheaper emblems are VERY soft and easy to damage if you apply much 
pressure. Just from pushing them into position they can warp they are 
so soft. Once you know this, they are fine to work with if you take 
proper care with installation... if you go that route...

Of the top of my head, I don't know. I will have to look at my car.
 
But, like I said, I was lined up with another firebird and the dudes 400
emblems were way off and I know that mine are factory.
 
As I recall, his drives one was slanted forward and mine was to the back
 
And its thickness was different
