Hi All,
I can't believe I'm asking this question, but.....

I'm doing my front brakes for the first time since I converted to disk a
couple of years ago.  When I try to compress the pistons to make room for
the new pads, I sprung a fluid leak at the master cylinder (no, it's not
just overflowing from the reservoir).

Was I supposed to open some kind of valve to allow the pistons to compress?
If so, I didn't and suspect that I just ruined my master cylinder.
