You could try 3M weatherstrip release agent. It softens adhesive and rubber. As far as harming paint, the label only says to wipe it quickly from lacquer to avoid marring the surface.

Hi listers,

As I look for the "perfect" 68 for the daily driver, I keep coming across cars 
with door molding on the crease.  Two of the three I have owned have had it and several I 
see that are supposed to be original paint have it.  I've never seen in any literature 
that Pontiac did that, so I am guessing that it is a dealer applied thing.  Anyone know 
for sure?  Also, anyone know how to remove it without tearing off the paint (I removed it 
from both the cars of mine that had it, but that was on the way to new paint and it 
really ripped off the paint underneath-of course I just grabbed and pulled!).
