I also used the low pressure castings, they're indeed very soft. It
almost felt like working with a chromed candy cane. The do fit ok
though. I did not have the pin problem because I sawed them off and put
them on with a dot of special glue.
I do not expect the chroming to be very weather resistant (since my
experience with the reproduction side view mirror) but they're on for a
year now and no problems as of yet.
