I appreciate the comments,but I really want to know what was originally on  
the lower ball joints for grease fittings.  I agree that the uppers were  
likely straight.  I'm trying to make my car as correct as possible.

Original  fittings (one ball joint still riveted in place) in my 68 Bird 
were  straight and the replacement ball joint's fittings were straight. 
This is  not to say that the original fittings were not replaced at some 
time in  its 42 years. It's really just a matter of personal choice as to 
which  type to use. Which ever makes it easier to grease  them.
