I think you are just isolating the battery when you disconnect the  
alternator.  There is a drain somewhere.

I  have a 79 Corvette that has a slow battery drain.  I have narrowed   it 
down the the alternator.  There is the duel clip on connector with  a red  
and 
white wire that attach to the top of the alternator.   When the clip in  
disconnected from the alternator the drain goes  away.  There is power  
flowing 
to the red wire all the  time.  I am thinking that this red wire  should 
only 
have power  when the key is on but it has power all the time.   Whatever 
help  
I can get on this would be  great.
