Sorry to reply to my own post, but I can't figure out how to edit my previous post here (if that's possible). I figured out how to downgrade Firebug; there's a link to "all versions" of Firebug at <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/1843> -- but apparently you have to first uninstall the later version, then quit and relaunch Firefox, then install the earlier version. Trying to install the earlier version "over" the later one didn't work properly.
Now that I've downgraded to Firebug 1.05, it's working okay again in Firefox 2. I think I'll delay upgrading to Firefox 3 even longer than I thought I would, to give various developers time to work some of the kinks out of their extensions. BTW, does Firebug 1.2 consistently understand "console.log" in Firefox 3, both from external JS files and from typing "console.log" directly into the console?
