If you install Firebug in a new Firefox profile, open up a single web
page, open Firebug, then the bug icon must be grey.
Is it grey?
If not, then you already have a problem.  Something is out of whack. I
think it is worth double checking that you are running in a new
profile and only Firebug is installed.

What version of Firefox? OS?
