While I agree that this workaround is undesirable, a solution on the
Firebug side would require a month of development time and would only
work in FF 3.5.1. We don't have either one of those.

I believe the issues is specific to Firefox 3.5. You could try Firebug
1.4 on Firefox 3.0 to see.
