I agree completely. If you have an alternative solution, I would
really like to hear about it.

I believe that what is going on in these case is something like this:

1. User has Firebug 1.3.3 + other extensions. All works.

2.User updates to Firebug 1.4. Some changes in Firebug implementation
to handle FF 3.5 conflict with some extension. Firebug fails; user
blames Firebug.

3. User creates a clean profile and installs Firebug. Works.

4. User adds more extensions. Most of the time this works. When it
fails, user blames the newly added extension. But it is also the case
that user accidently update extensions in the process. That is, they
had v2 of addon X and did not update before; now in the new profile
they load v2.1. So they end up with the 'same' extensions as before
but it all works because of additional updates.
