Ooops. There it is: you said "On for all pages". That explains two
things:
  1) On for all pages in 1.5 removes the Off for site button. You said
On for **ALL** pages so off for one is not an option (will be
eventually).
  2) When you go to gmail it should be on, no matter what you do.

This feature has some problems, but we want to get rid of it instead
of fix it, since too many users have exactly the reaction you had.

Just don't use this feature if you want Off for gmail.
