I wanted to report back that I discovered that when booting off an alternative backup bootable disk, that I can bring firebug up. It's the same installation, but running off a different disk. So I'm going to the "Program Files/thunderbird . . ." folder on what is now my D: disk. As such, the problem must be in some corrupted aspect of that other disk which went through some bad infections last week. So it isn't a problem with the installation, the code, or with the security software, which is running on both systems. Thanks for your help in this problem.
