Please try Firebug 1.5b6 in Firefox 3.5 or Firebug 1.6a2 in Firefox 3.6. But based on your description I think you have some other extension or problem. You could try installing in a new firefox profile, see http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ jjb
