Please say "...causing Firefox to hang..". In a crash the program's
window goes away.

Check Firefox > Tools > Error Console.
 or
Install Firebug 1.5X.0 from http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.5X,
and trace ERRORS as discussed in the FAQ:
