We don't know what causes this effect.
Do you have up to date versions of all of your extensions?
Are you using US-english version?
Are you using Windows 2000?

Typically installing firebug in a new Firefox profile will solve these
problems. Re- or un-installing does not change the Firefox extension
configuration information.
