You don't see the Firefox status bar or you don't see the Firebug icon
in the status bar?

On that menu use Options > Reset All. Does it help?  I guess not. So
you have a way to be sure to succeed:
1) Create a new Firefox profile (see http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ)
2) Install Firebug 1.6X.0a11, http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.6X.
If that works, you can try going back to 1.5.4.
