I had the same issue and to fix I needed to do the same as DTshadow

I had to do
"Restore default set" in customize and firebug icon appeared again.

Plus the firebug icon was "broken" when it showed up, but it added
again to the status bar. I am not sure why it disappeared in the first
place becuase I have been using firebug for years and it never
happened to me before...
