Just a little note from my side: Firefox 15.0.1 is outdated. You should 
update to 17.0.1 (and Firebug 1.11.1, which we released 
yesterday<https://blog.getfirebug.com/2012/12/13/firebug-1-11-1/>
).

I already contacted Chris Pederick (the guy behind Web Developer) earlier 
and asked him if he wanted to work with us to integrate his extension with 
Firebug. He told me that he'd like to but doesn't have time to do so.

I just hope they consider it because it would be amazing to use the web

The Inspector *is* the selection method. :-) And yes, it has a shortcut: 
Ctrl+Shift+C.

Having extensions for Firebug is a big advantage over other web dev tools, 
because they extend Firebug's functionality in many different ways. So 
check them out.
