Sorry to pile on to this old thread, but I thought I would mention that I just experienced the exact confusion Jonukas did. FF 17.0.1, installed 3 days ago on a brand new Mac. Search addons for Firebug, install. Restart required (!). After that, 1.7.3 is installed, and doesn't work. Uninstall. Restart. Find and install again. No restart required. Now 1.11.1 is installed.
